WATERCOLOR MAGIC; TECHNIQUE CLASS

COMPLETED

We will work on several paintings at once. Not only to utilize specific techniques, but to let them dry between practicing. Bring several boards (12”x16” minimum)! A couple sheets of foam core or heavy cardboard will suffice for the class. Covering them with clear packing tape will make switching paintings easier. Because it is a class, assume none of them will be a finished, hang on the wall painting. Included will be a handout of all the techniques, and, hopefully, time to demo any other techniques of interest to you.

MILKY WAY DARK SKY
(first painting)

Techniques include:

  • Spraying masking fluid (Pebeo Drawing Gum)
    for stars

  • Blending edges between light and extreme dark around the space we leave for a campfire

  • Pouring, mixing, dropping, dark rich colors
(with a choice to add northern lights)

  • Dissolving edges while doing a large background.

  • Washes/glazes for large multicolored background

  • Removing masking fluid
    (Pebeo Drawing Gum)

  • Applying wet paint over dry heavy paint

  • Correcting the unsatisfactory stars
    (lifting, knife point, scrubbing)

MOON, PINE TREES, AND SNOW SHADOWS
(second painting)

Techniques include:

  • Painting around shapes
    (both blurred & crisp edges)

  • Dropping wet paint into wet paint

  • Impressions into paint
    (scraping, tissue, stamping, plastic wrap)

  • Using rice/glass/beads to create dark patterns.

  • Drip/drizzle in a controlled direction

  • Bleeding

  • Brush handling

  • Controlling a damp surface, adding thick paint, and creating blooms with thinner paint
